The Arizona State YoYo Contest will be following the Judging standards set forth by the Czech YoYo Association
Competitors perform their own tricks on stage to pre-selected music.
It is used in categories Arizona State Champion Division and Pro Freestyle Division
The evaluation is based on the international IYYF rules, which can be viewed, for example, at this link. However, CYA uses simplified evaluations compared to the IYYF rules.
The Freestyle evaluation is divided into two subcategories:
Technical part – 60% of the total evaluation
Performance part – 40% of the total evaluation
The percentage distribution of the evaluation may vary in individual categories, but the standard distribution is 60% / 40%
Arizona State Champion Division and Pro Freestyle Division offer players 2 minutes to showcase their skills to music
If you don’t upload music we can help chose you something.
TLDR… do your best tricks in the time limit and make them look good!
——-
Technical part – 60%
Evaluation is done using clicks. Each judge has one in each hand.
+ For a correctly performed element, the judge clicks one plus point
– For a mistake, the judge clicks one minus point
Typical tricks and their parts that are scored include: mounts, dismounts, string hits, hops, grinds, lacerations, release catches (like suicides/Iron Whips), slack catches, re-generations, binds, etc.
Performance part – 40%
Here the judges assess the “artistic” part of the performance (so-called evaluation). This is the case of 4 subcategories, which will appear next:
Control
Use of music
Use of space and emphasis
Presentation
These are explained in Detail below.
———-
Control: 0-10 points
Translated as Control, formerly also Cleanliness
Control of the yoyo string, string guidance, yoyo trajectory, smooth landings and smooth transitions
Are the tricks performed in a clean, smooth and controlled manner?
Do the transitions in the tricks and between elements demonstrate mastery and control of the yoyo style?
Does the competitor throw the yoyo (catch and throw) cleanly?
Is each trick practiced and performed perfectly?
Were the tricks performed smoothly and smoothly?
Were the tricks sufficiently prepared for the performance?
It is not about how smooth the performance is or the number of mistakes. It is simply about how good the control of the yoyo and string is.
Use of Music: 0-10 points
Also known as Music Use (in other rules as Choreography and Construction divided into two categories).
Use of music, choreography, consistency with changes and highlights in the music, rhythm/beat, atmosphere (meaning of music, timing)
Does the music seem to fit the theme of the freestyle?
Are the tricks timed to hit the beat of the music?
Are there any transitions and points in the freestyle that clearly show intentional choreography?
Are the body movements and tricks aligned with the music?
Did the freestyle have scene changes, strong sequences, and climaxes?
Does music play a significant role in the freestyle?
Would the freestyle lose its meaning without music?
Space Use and Emphasis: 0-10 points
In English known as Space Use and Emphasis .
Scale/Focus, Size of Yoyo Movements, Use of Stage: (Range of movements, performance, effective use of stage and space, and effective focus of attention on essential elements)
Does the competitor use the stage and space around them effectively?
Is the trick performed in a way that is easy to see?
Were small movements or subtle elements focused on to capture the audience's attention?
Presentation: 0-10 points
Presentation, formerly also "Showmanship".
Theme, experience, entertainment, overall impression of the performance.
Was the performance staged and constructed in a way that increases the interest of the freestyle?
How entertaining was the presentation of the freestyle?
Did you use your outfit (clothing) effectively during the performance?
Is it a performance that attracts and engages the audience?
The excitement and fun that comes purely from the technical style of yo-yoing does not count here. On the contrary, the added value of the freestyle that makes it interesting in addition to the tricks and skills counts.
